Koh Sumet

A group of U.N. interns decided to go to the island of Kho Sumet. The trip was 3 hours by bus plus 30 minutes by boat. The island was great. The only two concerns were that I got sunburned (big time) and the water was not clear (meaning I couldn’t do snorkeling). Overall, it was a GREAT weekend. We met near Democracy Monument at 5 in the morning and arrive at the island at 11:30. Then we got accommodations for 150 bahts each (5 dollars) in a decent place. For the rest of the weekend we enjoyed the sun, water, football (soccer), and the food…

At night on Saturday we went to a nice restaurant on the beach. They had great food and we had a great time. The restaurant provided a fire show –people joggling sticks of fire and stuff… Also, my friend Nelson and I rented a motorcycle to go around the island for 100 bahts (around 3 dollars) for 1 hour. We came back at 11PM on a Sunday.

During the week I got a lot of work which is what I wanted. Also Wendy already purchased the tickets to come. Yeeehhhh!!! I can’t wait for her to come see me. Another thing that happened during this week is that my computer got messed up. I erased an account that I was not using to free more space but I needed a CD afterwards that is at home. Wendy is sending it to me so that I can fix it. I also discovered a dessert place near my house that is so popular and good. They have been in business for more than 60 years, and for a reason!!! The problem is that I am trying to lose weight, not gain weight. I am doing well on losing weight though. I also discovered AirAsia… 45 Dollars to go to Phuket, Chang Mai, etc… round trip and taxes… and any day I want.

Everything is going great…. I can’t wait to see Wendy and my mom here. It would make the summer even better than what already is.

First week as a U.N. intern in Thailand.

EN ESPAÑOL MAS ABAJO

What a week… My internship is amazing!!!! I am doing exactly what I want to be doing. The internship is challenging and rewarding, with tons of work… But I love it!!! The entire project is to support the report on “The State of the Environment in Asia and the Pacific 2010”. As of right now, I am researching environmental indicators to measure sustainable development for countries in UNESCAP. And I am having fun with it.

From Monday to Thursday I am planning to play football/soccer with the locals that work in the U.N. They always play after work, somehow I saw them playing in the parking lot, when I decided to approach them and asked them to let me play. This part would help me to get fit and to mingle with the locals. They are already teaching me Thai, which is great. I am the only person not from Thailand and they love the fact that I want to play with them. Of course, I play better than them but I have lot of fun.

There are about 30 interns in UNESCAP, 3 of whom work in the same department as I do. The good thing is that is a decent group to have fun. We normally eat together and/or have coffee afterwards (ice cream for me for 25 bahts (70 cents)) in the coffee shop downstairs. The way the system works is: interns are coming and going, so the old interns need to explain how things work and have to take the new interns to see the city. This is why the good spots never die, since they are easily found do to past interns knowledge and word of mouth. For example, on Thursday, thanks to older interns, we went to cocktail party organized by the European Commission in Thailand. It was lots of fun, with free food and a movie. It was very fancy, but somehow my pictures got erase, so I cannot prove I was there, except for the fact that I got a business card from the spokesperson for the EC. Don’t worry I am not moving to Thailand to work here. On Friday there was another event on the Thai Cultural Center. It took us 2 hours to do 10km because of the traffic. We have learn the lesson, never go anywhere you need to get a taxi for Friday nights. The taxi was not expensive, for 2 hours we paid 200 bahts ($ 5), and divided it by 4 people, so I paid $1.25… let me laugh, hahahaha. Somehow we got there, the show was already on. It was called ASEAN +3 countries for the king. Somehow it was a televised show that had lots of musicians from the ASEAN region, plus China, Korea, and Japan. It was great and all for FREE!!! Being a U.N. intern gets you lots of things. For example, where tourist have to pay 400 bahts ($ 10) to enter the Grand Palace, as U.N. intern I have to pay 20 bahts ( 50 cents). And we also get invited to so many places… It is great!

After the show, we went to Khao San, a bag paker world heaven. In my opinion, it is not that amazing comparing to places in Spain. But it is good enough to experience Bangkok. I had my first insect on this street: a cricket. It was not that bad, actually, quite tasty. And I am not kidding. Somehow, we end up talking about politics til 6 in the morning. I guess being an intern in the U.N. entitles to have deep political discussions with fellow interns ‘till 6 in the morning.

I also want to say that I cut my hair. Hahahaha. It doesn’t look bad, but the woman didn’t even understand the word or concept that I wanted my hair SHORTER. She, finally, did what I wanted but it took a lot of explain to do. And it only cost me 40 bahts ($ 1).

Right after this post, I am going to one of the most famous markets in the world: Chatuchak Market. Hopefully, I can get a good bargain!!!!

¡¡¡¡Vaya semana… mis practicas son increíbles!!!! Estoy haciendo exactamente lo que quiero estar haciendo. Las practicas son difíciles y hay un montón de trabajo, pero a la vez recompensa estar aquí. ¡¡¡Me encanta!!! El proyecto es para un informe sobre “El estado del Medio Ambiente en Asia y el Pacifico para el 2010”. Por ahora, estoy investigando indicadores para el medio ambiente para medir el desarrollo sostenible en diferentes países de UNESCAP. Me lo estoy pasando bien.

De Lunes a Jueves juego a fútbol con la gente de aquí que trabaja en el edificio de la ONU. Ellos siempre juegan después del trabajo, de alguna manera los vi jugando en el parking y decidí ir a hablar con ellos para preguntarles para dejarme jugar. Esto me va ayudar a ponerme en forma y me va a dar la oportunidad de conocer mas a la gente de Tailandia. Ya me están enseñando Tailandés, les encaja que juegue con ellos. Esta claro que juego mejor que ellos pero me lo paso muy bien.

Hay unos 30 becarios en UNESCAP, 3 de los cuales trabajan en mi departamento. Es un buen grupo para hacer cachondeo. Normalmente, comemos juntos, o tomamos un café después de comer (helado para mí por 25 bahts (50 céntimos)), en la cafetería de abajo. De la manera que el sistema funciona: los becarios van y vienen, los becarios con mas tiempo tienen que explicar como funciona todo, y tienen que enseñar la ciudad a los nuevos. De esa manera los lugares buenos nunca mueren. Por ejemplo, el Jueves pasado, gracias a los becarios con mas tiempo aquí, nos llevaron a una “fiesta - cocktail ” organizado por la Comisión Europea en Tailandia. Fue muy divertido, con comida buenísima y una peli (gratis). Era muy pijillo, y no se cómo borre las fotos, o sea que no puedo probar que estuve allí, excepto que tengo una tarjeta de negocios de la jefa de prensa. No os preocupéis no me vengo a vivir aquí en el futuro. El Viernes, hubo otro evento, esta vez en el Centro Cultural Tailandés. Tardamos 2 horas para hacer 10km por él trafico. Hemos aprendido la lección, nunca ir a ningún sitio cuando tengas que coger un taxi el viernes por la noche. El taxi no fue muy caro, por 2 horas pagamos 200 bahts (4 Euros) dividido por 4 personas, pague solo un euro… dejarme reírme, hahahaha. De alguna manera llegamos allí, el show ya había empezado. Se llamaba ASEAN +3 Countries for the King. Era televisado, con músicos de China, Corea, Japón, y la región de Sureste Asiático. ¡¡¡Fue genial y GRATIS!!! Ser interino de la ONU te da muchas cosas. Por ejemplo, cuando los turistas tienen que pagar 400 baths (8 Euros) para entrar al Palacio Real, como becario pago 20 bahts (50 céntimos). Y además nos invitan a tantos sitios.

Después del espectáculo, fuimos a Khao San, famoso por todo el mundo por su ambiente. En mi opinión, no es tanta cosa comparado con muchos sitios en España. Pero es suficiente para experimentar Bangkok. Tuve mi primer insecto en esta calle: un grillo. No estaba mal, la verdad, es que era gustoso. Y no miento. De alguna manera acabamos el día hablando de política hasta alas 6 de la mañana. Supongo que eso es lo que tiene ser un becario de la ONU. (MIRA el VIDEO de cuando me como un grillo MAS ARRIBA).

También quiero decir que me he cortado el pelo, Hahhaha. No esta mal, pero la mujer no me entendía ni una palabra, ni siquiera mas corto. Al final hizo lo que quería pero con un montón de explicaciones. Y solo me costo 40 bahts (menos de 1 Euro).

Ahora me voy a unos de los mercados más impresionantes del mundo: Chatuchak Market. Ojala, que pueda negociar bien el precio.

Post 2: Tuk-Tuk experience and western civilization in the Far East

Today has been my first day for sightseeing the places near me and experiencing how local westerners spend their Saturdays. I started the day with a wonderful breakfast and while I ate I talked to Wendy in Skype. The time difference is 11 hours, so my 7:30AM is her 8:30 PM. After breakfast, I took my camera and started to go around my area. I walked for 2 hours, taking lots of pictures, the majority of Buddhist temples, since they are all over the place. I live in the old city, which has lots of monuments and government buildings.

The closest monument to me, one block away, is the Democracy monument, which has been a rally point for demonstrations. In 1992, lots of people died when demonstrating here. This demonstration made the monument known around the world. The good thing about the monument for me is that is great for telling taxi drivers where they need to drop me off. It has a lot of traffic but that is Bangkok. Traffic is extra dangerous for people that are not use to the British system. I always look the wrong way first. I am learning to check right first instead of left when I cross the street.

I decided to go see the Grand Palace. While walking there, I saw the red shirts. As many of you may know, there is a lot of political unrest in Thailand among red (poor) and yellow (rich) shirts. They rally very close the Grand Palace. But the only thing I saw is people trying to “sell” red shirts more than rallying.

Near the Grand Palace, ANOTHER tuk-tuk driver approached me. He said that the way I was dress I would not be able to get in the palace because at that time it was prayer time. I was wearing a t-shirt, not long sleeves. So he offered to take me somewhere else for 20 bahts (50 cents). I said 10 bahts, and he said yes right away; so probably, the normal price was 5 bahts. This ride was AMAZING!!! I experienced Bangkok to the fullest.

Grand Palace

The driver took me where he promised, while telling me the starting line up for FC Barcelona. It was not far, but for my 10 bahts, it was very farrrr. Once I got there, he told me that the price included the return to the Grand Palace also. And he said he would wait 15 minutes for me while I took pictures to the place. I was amaze of what my 10 bahts were doing for me. When I got back, he said that the tuk-tuk needed water. While he went for water, somebody approached me to talk to me. I still don’t know if these people were related but they probably were. The conversation was pleasant. They are always surprise when I say that I will be here for more than 3 months. I normally not say much about me because of safety reason but I told him that I worked at the UN. Somehow the conversation end up talking about the type of suit I wear to the UN (the reason why I think these people are related). The tuk-tuk driver finished his fixing at the same time I finished the conversation of suits. Then, he said that he would take me somewhere else and later to the Grand Palace. I loved my 10 bahts ride. Somehow he tuk-tuk driver took me to a suit shop. He said he need it my help… that I didn’t need to buy anything “just look”. I was not concerned about were I was, a block away from the UN. And since Wendy has been talking to me about buying a cheap suit I said yes. At the shop, they showed me styles (Armani, Hugo Boss) and told me that they could do any of those. Total 5000 bahts ($144), this included everything, a costume suit, shirt, belt, and tie. I said may be another day. The fact that I wanted to know the price did not mean that I wanted to buy. The guy understood right away I didn’t wanted to buy. So he gave me a business card. Then, the tuk-tuk driver took me to another suit place. He said it was good for him even if I didn’t buy. So I went. Being an economist I needed to compare prices. And the same deal in this store was 2000 bahts ($57). Even though I liked the deal I didn’t want to buy. The guy got a little angry, and started to tell me that Spanish people are not like Americans because Americans say I like the deal, and they buy it. I told him that I was not rich like Americans. Hahaha. So he gave me another business card and asked me to come back. This time the tuk-tuk driver wanted the business card that the guy gave me. He said that it was good for him, I still don’t know how. I thought that if I bought something it was going to be good for him but since I didn’t, the card did fine for him. Then, he said he wanted to take me to another shop. Then, I said no. And I told him to take me back. He did. Having this experience was amazing, since it was the real tourist experience. But it made a little bit worn out about the old Bangkok. So I decided to go to the western world in the Far East.

I went back to my place to leave my camera and changed my shoes. By then, I needed to be one more person and not a tourist. So I asked the receptionist at my place where to go. I took a taxi to the western world, I never thought that so many shopping malls were going to make happy. I decided to relax and watch a movie, Angels and Demons with Tom Hanks. The price was 150 bahts ($4). But somehow there was a section VIP for 250 bahts ($7). I wanted to know the difference so I asked. I didn’t understand what the girl said but it felt that it was a lot of things, so I decided to go with the VIP. It was not worth it. The VIP was a complementary drink and a more comfortable place with blankets. I thought that it was a good way to disconnect from the outside world. But before the movie started, I was reminded, beside the Thai subtitles on the screen, that I was in Thailand. There was an announcement about respecting the king on the screen. And people started to stand up and remained standing for the time that the short documentary was on. I did the same. A friend of mine told me about the importance of the king in Thailand. Every taxi, for example, has the picture of the king. After the movie, I went grocery shopping for some snacks. And then I went back to my place.

Today I learn a lot of things and have decided about my schedule for my time in Bangkok: work every week Monday-Friday, go to the western world every Saturday, and rest every Sunday.

Hoy ha sido mi primer día para ver los sitios conocidos cerca de donde vivo. Además, he experimentado como vive la gente occidental los sábados en Bangkok. Empiezo todos los días con un buen desayuno y hablando con Wendy en Skype. La diferencia de horario son de 11 horas, las 7:30 para mí, son las 8:30 para ella. Después del desayuno, me lleve la cámara y empecé a tomar fotos por los alrededores del hostal. Caminé por 2 horas, tomando un montón de fotos, la mayoría de templos budistas, ya que están por todos lados.

Vivo en la ciudad Antigua, que tiene un montón de monumentos y edificios del gobierno.El monumento más cercano a mí, está a una calle del hostal, es el monumento a la Democracia, y ha sido el punto de reunión de muchas manifestaciones. En 1992, mucha gente murió en una manifestación. Esta manifestación hizo este monumento famoso por todo el mundo. Lo bueno del monumento para mí, es que es fácil decirle a los taxistas donde tienen que llevarme. Tiene mucho tráfico pero es Bangkok en general. El tráfico es peligroso, para gente que no esta acostumbrada al sistema británico. Siempre miro al lado equivocado. Estoy aprendiendo a mirar primero a la derecha en vez de la izquierda cuando cruzo la calle.

Decidí ir al Gran Palacio, mientras iba hacia allí, vi los de las camisetas rojas. Como muchos de vosotros sabéis, hay un poco de revuelta política en Tailandia con las camisas rojas (pobres) y las camisas amarillas (ricos). Ellos hacen sus rallis muy cerca del Gran Palacio. Pero lo único que vi era gente vendiendo camisetas rojas mas que manifestándose.

Cerca del Gran Palacio, otro conductor de tuk-tuks vino hacia mí. Me dijo que de la manera que iba vestido no podría entrar en Palacio porque era la hora de oración. Llevaba una camiseta de manga corta. Entonces me ofreció llevarme a otro lugar por 20 bahts (40 céntimos) Le dije que 10 bahts y acepto rápidamente; O sea que probablemente tenia que haber sido 5 bahts. Este viaje fue una pasada!!!! Ya que experimente Bangkok en su plenitud.

El conductor me lleva donde me prometió, mientras me decía la alineación del Barça. El sitio no estaba lejos, pero por mis 10 bahts era muy lejossssss. Una vez llegue allí, me dijo que el precio incluía la vuelta al Gran Palacio. Y me dijo que me esperaría 15 minutos mientras tomaba fotos del lugar. Estaba impresionado de cuanto mis 10 baths podían conseguir. Cuando volví, me dijo que el tuk-tuk necesitaba agua. Mientras fue a por agua, alguien vino a hablar conmigo. Aun no sé si esta gente esta relacionada pero probablemente lo estaban. La conversación fue agradable. Siempre se sorprenden cuando digo que me quedaré por 3 meses. Normalmente no digo mucho sobre mi por razones de seguridad, pero le dije que trabajaba en la ONU. De algún modo acabamos la conversación hablando de que traje llevo a la ONU (la razón por la que creo que esta gente estaba relacionada). El conductor del tuk-tuk acabo de poner el agua justo cuando acabe la conversación de trajes. Entonces me dijo, que me llevaría a un sitio más, antes de llevarme otra vez al Gran Palacio. Yo estaba flipando con mis 10 bahts. De alguna manera el conductor del tuk-tuk me llevo a una tienda de trajes. Me dijo que necesitaba mi ayuda… y que no tenía que comprar nada… tan solo “mira”. No estaba preocupado de la zona donde estaba porque era a una calle de la ONU. Y como Wendy me ha estado hablando de que me compre un traje le dije que sí. En la tienda, me enseñaron muchos estilos (Armani, Hugo Boss) y me dijeron que podían reproducir el mismo traje. Total 5000 bahts (106 €), y incluía el traje hecho a medida, cinturón, y corbata. Le dije que otro día. La cosa es que quería saber el precio, no significaba que quería comprar nada. El hombre entendió rápidamente que no quería comprar nada en ese momento. Entonces me dio una tarjeta de negocios. El tuk-tuk me llevo a otra tienda de trajes. Me dijo que era bueno para él, aún que no comprase nada. Fui, siendo un economista necesito comparar precios. Y la misma propuesta que antes, aquí era 2000 baths (42 €). Aunque me gustaba el trato, no quise comprar aún. El hombre se enfado un poco, y empezó ha decirme, que los españoles no somos como los americanos, porque los americanos cuando les gusta el trato, lo compran, hahaha. Entonces me dio otra tarjeta de necogio y me dijo que volviera. El conductor del tuk-tuk quería la tarjeta de negocio que el hombre me había dado. Me dijo que era bueno para él, aun no se cómo. Pensé que si compraba algo seria bueno para él, pero como no lo hice, la tarjeta era suficiente para él. Entonces me dijo que me llevaría a otra tienda. Le dije que no. Y le dije que me llevase a donde habíamos quedado. Me llevo. Esta experiencia fue una pasada, ya que fue una experiencia muy turística. Pero me cansé de la Bangkok Antigua. Cuando decidí ir al mundo occidental en el lejano oriente.

Volví a mi hostal para dejar la cámara y cambiarme el calzado. Para entonces, necesitaba ser una persona y no un turista. Entonces le pregunté a la recepcionista a donde ir. Tomé un taxi al mundo occidental, nunca pensé que me alegraría tanto de ver tantos Centros Comerciales. Decidí relajarme y ir a ver un peli, Ángeles y Demonios de Tom Hanks. El precio era 150 bahts (3€) , pero había una sección VIP por (5 €). Quise saber la diferencia. No entendí lo que me dijo la chica pero parecía que había muchas cosas, por eso decidí ir al VIP. No merecía la pena. El VIP es una bebida con asientos más grandes y una manta. Pensé que la película sería una buena manera de desconectar del mundo oriental. Pero antes que la película empezara, me recordaron, aparte de los subtítulos en Tailandés, que estaba en Tailandia. Hubo un anuncio sobre respetar al Rey. La gente se empezó a levantar y permanecer de pie, mientras hacían un documental pequeño, del Rey de Tailandia. Me levante del asiento como los demás. Un amigo mío me dijo sobre la importancia del Rey en Tailandia. Cada taxi, por ejemplo, tiene una foto del rey. Después de la película, me fui al supermercado. Y luego volví a hostal.

Hoy he aprendido un montón de cosas de Tailandia y he decido sobre mi horario en Bangkok: Trabajar de Lunes a Viernes, ir a occidente los sábados, y descansar los domingos.

It is amazing how I got here! From not graduating from high school, to being in a great master programs, such as Boston University, to getting an internship at the United Nations at the Environmental and Development Division in UNESCAP. It is GOD!!!

It is amazing to be here. I arrived on May 14th at 6:30 AM, it was a flight that I will remember forever: 16 hours stock to a chair from Los Angeles to Bangkok, plus the 6 hours from Boston to L.A. When I got into the airport everything seem pretty normal... the airport is new, it was built 2 years ago, the reason why my travel book does not have it. But then, at the airport, my experience of Thailand started to unravel. All sorts of people from nowhere wanted to give me a ride in their taxis. I didn’t want one. I was trying to kill some time, so that I didn’t have to be sitting around at my hotel before checking in. I finally took a bus for 150 Baths (5 dollars). During my ride from the airport, I experience first hand the traffic in Bangkok… I am glad I didn’t take a taxi. It took me 2 hours and 30 minutes for a 20 km ride. During this trip, I was able to see more of the real Bangkok.

The city... At first, I was a little bit shocked, I saw a women washing her pots and pans in a water dump, the water look filthy… Then, it was time for me to get out of the bus. While in the bus, I saw the main street I was going to stay. I decided to take a taxi from the bus station to the bed and breakfast. It took forever because the taxi driver did not know the street I was in. I wasn’t worried about the meter, the ride cost me 100 baths (3 dollars). At the end, he called the bed and breakfast. No wonder, the taxi driver didn’t know where it was, it is in tiny ally of another tiny ally. The place is great, surreal compared to the surroundings. It is like a normal bed and breakfast Asian style. The showers are outside, and since it is raining cats and dogs, it feels amazing. My room is tiny but has anything I want. The price is not cheap comparing to places around the area (cheap comparing to U.S. places of course). It costs me 14,000 baths ($400) for 18 nights, and it includes breakfast, wi-fi, tv, ect. But I am planning to stay for 6,000 (250 dollars) baths a month in another place after this place.

After I got settle in my new place, I experienced the outside. As soon I got out of the B&B, I saw people having meals in very scary places, meaning dirty. Except for palaces, government places, skyscrapers, and malls, which there are many of each, Bangkok is somewhat shocking. Hard to explain in just one day, let me explore more… I will have a better opinion in the following days.

While I was experiencing the outside, I decided to go to the U.N. so that I knew how far it was from the place I was staying to office. Not far, but since it raining and is so hot, it makes my 20 minute walk interesting, meaning “soggy.” It is so hot and it is the winter now, come on!!!!

My first day at the U.N. I am writing this from the 5th floor. From my desk I can see the outside: the king palace and the Thai interior ministry building, with an amazing soccer field. I wonder, if I can convince somebody to let me play there. THIS IS AMAZING!!! The internship makes the cultural shock worth it. When I mean the “cultural shock” is that I am not a tourist, I am trying to survive among the locals. I am not the Thailand of the resorts where everything is beautiful.

The thing that I miss the most, of course, is Wendy. But I am using skype. And it works fine, I had breakfast while talking to her, thank you God, I need Wendy time.

From that note I will continue writing in the future

He llegado ha Tailandia!!!!

Es una pasada como he llegado aquí. De no graduarme en el Instituto, a estar haciendo un master en Boston University, a ser un becario en las Naciones Unidas para el Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo en UNESCAP. Ha sido Dios!!!

Es una pasada estar aquí. Llegue el día 14 de Mayo a las 6:30 de la mañana, fue un vuelo que nunca olvidaré: 16 horas sentado desde Los Ángeles a Bangkok, mas las 6 horas de Boston a Los Ángeles. Cuando llegue al aeropuerto, todo parecía normal… el aeropuerto era nuevo, lo construyeron hace dos años, la razón porque no lo tenia en mi libro de Tailandia. Pero luego en el mismo aeropuerto, mi experiencia sobre Tailandia empezó a florecer. Todo tipo de personas de la nada me querían llevar en sus taxis. Yo no quería ir en taxi. Quería perder tiempo, para no tener que estar sentado en el hotel para que me dieran la habitación. Finalmente tome un auto-bus por 150 bahts (3€). Durante el viaje desde el aeropuerto, experimente de primera mano el trafico de Bangkok… Me alegro que no tome un taxi. Tarde 2 horas y media para hacer 20 Km. Durante el viaje pude mas de la Bangkok real.

La ciudad… A lo primero, estuve un poco sorprendido, ya que vi a una mujer lavando cacharros en una especie de fosa con una agua que parecía muy sucia. Después de ver esto desde el auto-bus, era la hora de bajarme. Mientras estaba en el auto-bus vi la calle donde estaba el hotel. Decidí tomar un taxi desde la estación de autobuses hacia el hostal. Tarde muchísimo rato porque el taxista no sabia donde el estaba el hotel. No estaba preocupado sobre cuanto me iba a costar el viaje, en total me costo 100 bahts (2€). Al final, el taxista llamo al hostal. Y entonces es cuando me di cuenta porque no lo encontraba. Estaba en una callejuela de una callejuela. El sitio es genial, un poco surrealista comparado con los alrededores. Es como un hostal normal pero tipo asiático. Las duchas están fuera, y como esta lloviendo un montón, mola mucho. Mi habitación es pequeña pero tiene todo lo que quiero. El precio no es barato comparado con sitios aquí (barato comparando con los sitios en España). Me cuesta 14,000 bahts (300€) por 18 noches, y incluye desayunos, wi-fi, tv, ect... Pero pienso en mudarme a un sitio que vale unos 6,000 bahts (130€) al mes después de aquí.

Después que poder acomodarme tranquilamente en mi nuevo lugar, experimente las afueras del hostal. Cuando salí del hostal, vi a gente comiendo en sitios que no tenían muy buen aspecto, ya que estaban sucios. Excepto palacios, edificios del gobierno, rascacielos, y centros comerciales, los cuales hay muchos de todos estos, Bangkok en general es sorprendente. Difícil de explicar en un día que llevo aquí, dejarme explorar mas…Tendré una mejor opinión en los próximos días.

Mientras experimentaba la afueras del hostal, decidí ir al edificio de las Naciones Unidas para saber cuanto tardaría desde donde estaba hospedado hasta allí. No esta mal, pero como llueve y hace tanta calor, hace que los 20 minutos de andar sean interesantes, o sea caluroso. Hace tanta calor y es el invierno aquí!!!!

Hoy es mi primer día en la ONU y estoy escribiendo desde la quinta planta del edificio.. Desde mi mesa puedo ver afuera: el Palacio Real, el edificio del Ministerio de Interior de Tailandia, con un bonito campo de fútbol. Me gustaría saber si puedo convencer a alguien que me dejen jugar. Esto es una PASADA!!! Este trabajo hace que choque cultural valga la pena. Cuando digo el “choque cultural” es porque no soy un turista, estoy intentado sobrevivir entre la gente de aquí. No estoy en la Tailandia de los hoteles maravillosos donde todo es precioso.

La cosa que echo de menos mas, por supuesto, es Wendy. Pero estoy usando skype. Y funciona bien, he tenido el desayuno mientras hablaba con ella, gracias Dios, necesito tiempo con Wendy.
